Impedance behavior

In the range of the highest impedance, i.e. the resonance range, the gray curve, which corresponds to the resistive ("ohmic") component of the impedance, has its maximum. The resistive component is only found in inductors with a ferrite core and represents the losses of the ferrite material over the frequency.

In case of choke applications in which inductors (with and without ferrite) are used, the best signal blocking occurs shortly below the self resonance frequency (SRF), where the impedance is very high and thus the attenuation reaches its maximum.

For filter or impedance-matching applications, it is more important to have constant inductance in the relevant frequency range, which means the SRF of the inductor should be well above the operating frequency of the circuit.

DC-Bias

For inductors, factors like DC bias current have less impact on the preservation of impedance until the inductors are used beyond the saturation current.

In contrast, DC bias has a prominent influence on multilayer ferrite (e.g. WE-CBF) and the current flowing through the component changes the impedance over a specific frequency range.

Multilayer ferrite saturate as a function of the flowing bias current, changing the impedance curve in the lower frequency (<100 MHz) at the same time, shifting the self resonant frequency higher in frequency.
